Earthquake?!
8:07 EST, Sunday, August 9th, 2020, NC
I glance at my clock while finagling my necklace, trying to get it untangled from 10 other necklaces. Shoot. I should have been downstairs 2 minutes ago. As I try to think of what else I need to get before leaving for church, my thoughts are interrupted by a low rumble. What in the world? Is it thundering? Suddenly, I feel a slight movement under my feet. I look up, and the necklaces that are hanging in my closet are slowly swinging back and forth. They were still just two seconds ago. A quick thought flashes through my mind. Earthquake? But it couldn't be! We never have earthquakes in North Carolina. And if we do, we almost never feel them! Was that just me? Am I imagining things? "Chad?" I hear my mother calling my Dad's name from downstairs in the kitchen. Nope, definitely not just me. "What was that?" I come out on our landing as Mom asks the question.
Yes, it was an earthquake. Nothing devastating, of course, but it was unusually high for North Carolina. It was a 5.1 on the Richter Scale, one that wouldn't cause much damage, but one that was pretty big considering it's North Carolina we're talking about. Almost 100 miles away from my home, we still very much felt the earthquake which was in Sparta, NC! When life brings earthquakes (hardships), who do you call out to? Just as my Mom called out for my Dad when we felt the shakiness, we as Christians should call out to our Heavenly Father when life gets shaky. And yes, even though my Dad wasn't able to do anything about the earthquake, Jesus certainly can! So, who do you call out to when life gets shaky?
This is a terrific post!! Thx for the reminder to call on our Heavenly Father. <3 So glad you're safe!!

Great post! We live near two plates, so we occasionally get earthquakes (though none that I remember).
ReplyDeleteWow! We are blessed to have earthquakes very rarely! I know I wouldn't want to live in California, as I know they have tons of earthquakes!

Oh no! I'm glad it wasn't too strong! Right now we're under a tornado warning, without a basement, so this is comforting. God is always with us.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad this is a comfort to you! I am praying for you and your family!

Thank you so much Caleigh! We did have to hide out in the hallway for a short time, but all was well. Again, thank you so much for praying. It means a lot to know that someone I never met cares:)
DeleteThank the Lord!! I am so glad y'all are okay! Aww, you're so sweet!

Caleigh, I was in Galax, VA at the time, visiting my grandparents. That's only about 20 miles from Sparta; it was quite strong there (we were eating breakfast) and our dog freaked out and started barking. My dad knew what it was and we were literally about to get up and stand under some doorways just in case the ceiling caved in, but it wasn't very long. That's the first one I've ever felt before. It was kind of scary.
